The carpet industry of India

Carpet weaving industry started flourishing in India around 16th century in the emperorship of Babar. Now India is the world’s largest producer and exporter of rugs. It is known for its beautiful designs, high quality and vibrant coloured carpets in the world. Rugs exporter in India export around 75-80% of manufactured carpets worldwide.

Carpet manufacturing units in India: Indian carpets are inspired by nature and the regional traditions. The main workshops for carpet weaving in India are located in:

  • Kashmir
  • Uttar Pradesh
  • Rajasthan
  • Andhra Pradesh

Bhadohi & Mirzapur areas in the state of Uttar Pradesh produce a large quantity of handmade carpets.


Markets and export locations: India accounts for around 40% of carpet export in the world. In the FY20, India did a business of US$ 1.37 billion by exporting the carpets where as in the FY21, this business reached to the height of US$ 1.49 billion. The locations to which Indian carpets are mainly exported are:

  • United States
  • Australia
  • Germany
  • United Kingdom
  • Canada

Carpet manufacturing encountering slowdown: India brings largest amount of foreign exchange by exporting carpets globally. It forms a main segment of Indian economy with over 2 million workers engaged in this work, which majorly includes women from rural India. However, the industry has witnessed the slowdown in export in the last few years.

Indian government is taking necessary steps to promote the industry on various platforms. Carpet Export Promotion Council (CEPC) looks after the issues. They organize carpet expo every year to bring buyers from all around the world and also boosting up the enthusiasm of workers.
